5 Questions to... HÃ¥kan Engman, Bentley Systems

What makes the digital city so relevant for geospatial surveyors, and what lies ahead for 3D city modelling? We asked these and a couple of other questions to Håkan Engman, the director of business development in the digital cities business unit at Bentley Systems. In that role, he is leading business management activities for OpenCities products. He is also responsible for the integration of the Swedish company Agency9 following Bentley’s acquisition of it in September 2018.  The ‘digital city’ or ‘smart city’ is a hot topic. What makes it so relevant for geospatial surveying professionals? In most cases, smart initiatives... (read more)

Trimble to Acquire Cityworks to Expand Digital Asset and Infrastructure Management Solutions

Trimble has signed a definitive agreement to acquire privately held Azteca Systems LLC (dba 'Cityworks'), a leading provider of enterprise asset management (EAM) software for utilities and local government. Cityworks' solutions address the global challenges associated with maintaining and replacing aging utility, transportation and public assets and infrastructure. The transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2019, subject to customary closing conditions and expiration of the waiting period under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act. Financial terms were not disclosed. Cityworks, based in Sandy, Utah, was launched in 1996 and provides a powerful and flexible office, cloud and mobile EAM software... (read more)

Geospatial Tools that Help Serve the AEC Industry

Read about three geospatial tools that are particularly relevant for the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry: BIM, virtual/augmented/mixed reality, and project collaboration software. Of the dozens of geospatial hardware and software tools currently in use, only a few – such as bathymetric Lidar, GNSS-based vehicle tracking devices and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) – are not directly relevant to the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry. The rest of the tools are. A GIS interprets the geographic context of a project, while the survey-grade GNSS technology builds it; aerial photogrammetry maps the project’s site, as UAVs monitor exterior progress; and mobile... Technical Advances Bring Digital Twin of Underground Infrastructure Closer

Mapping the underground is one of the major challenges in creating an infrastructure map at the municipal, regional, and national level, which is a key foundation for a national digital twin. Recent technical developments include: the ability to collect data at highway speeds that can be used to create a 3D model of underground infrastructure, software that can extract relevant 3D underground information from consumer digital photography, and video capture. Meanwhile, novel ways to share information about underground infrastructure, and progress on standards for sharing information about the subsurface are making mapping the underground increasingly feasible. The uncertainty in the... (read more)

The Geomatics Profession: Looking Forward to the Next Decade

As the years progress towards 2030, many challenges and opportunities may emerge for the profession across a wide spectrum of activities. The democratization of geospatial data and the rapid advancement of technologies to capture this data require a skilled labour force. Where will the surveyors, geospatial scientists and spatial data specialists come from?  The UN’s growing awareness of the importance of our oceans and seas will hopefully develop further into real sustainable actions and outcomes which should require further reliable and cost-effective data acquisition and data management solutions. I believe the general levels of underinvestment in the offshore and hydrographic... (read more)

Bringing BIM Down to Earth

‘BIM’ is a hot topic in the industry, receiving regular coverage at many conferences, seminars and webinars. A lot of companies predict that it is one of the ‘next big things’ for the future, and a not inconsiderable number of companies are already working with BIM today. And that’s a good thing! But it is perhaps wise to look past the hype and keep our feet firmly on the ground. Tomas Sandström from Adtollo brings some nuance into the BIM discussion in this column. BIM stands for ‘building information modelling’, or perhaps ‘building information management’. The best thing about BIM... (read more)

Geo Plus BIM Does Not Make GeoBIM

The added value of integrating geomatics (Geo) with building information modelling (BIM) to solve contemporary multidisciplinary challenges of our urban environment is widely recognized, writes Jantien Stoter. Much research and many projects have shown how geodata has been successfully used in design and construction activities, and how BIM data serves as a source for geodata. It seems straightforward, but there are various challenges still to be overcome, as outlined here. An architect (BIM) can take environmental information (Geo) into account while designing a building, and a municipality can then automatically check the design (BIM) against its environmental impact (Geo), such... The 123 of AEC: Renewing the Architecture, Engineering and Construction Industry with Satellite Imagery

A reoccurring sustainable issue faced by the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry is that of green buildings. The global market for green construction is projected to reach $364.6 billion USD by 2022. The demand for this kind of minimally invasive construction design will not only increase over the next 25 years, but is also set to significantly alter the industry. Combined with population growth, a challenge now exists for AEC professionals to creative innovative designs that are both economical and sustainable long term. Incorporating Very High Resolution (VHR) optical satellite imagery into the planning and development stages of any... (read more)
