UK-Canadian Partnership for GIS, BIM and CAD Data Visualization

MGISS, a UK-based consultancy company on the smarter use of data, technology and digital transformation, has partnered up with Canada-based vGIS to transform traditional GIS, BIM and CAD data into stunning augmented reality (AR) visualizations for utility and infrastructure applications. AR provides an interactive experience of an environment where objects that reside in the real world, such as underground services, are displayed and enhanced with additional intelligence such as condition information and maintenance history. MGISS has developed TopoGrafi, a platform that allows data capture applications and AR visualizations to use a common 3D co-ordinate system which aligns with high-accuracy Ordnance... (read more)

Interoperable Data Exchange – A Key Factor for BIM

Hardly any other topic dominates the digitalization of the construction industry with such intensity as building information modelling (BIM). The pressure to reduce costs and to plan and build more complex buildings faster and more safely is increasing due to international competition. Interoperable data exchange between systems and players is a key factor for BIM. Previously used data formats have to be brought together with newer formats that are constantly undergoing a standardization process. This also poses an enormous challenge for the software systems used as well. This article contains a discussion of data diversity and interfaces in the BIM... (read more)

3D Scan Data Pioneer Scaled Robotics Secures €2m Seed Investment

Norwegian Construct Venture and German PropTech Fund Surplus Invest have jointly invested in the promising deep-tech company Scaled Robotics. The start-up has developed a robot that builds detailed 3D maps of construction sites using its multimodal sensor suite, and software that can accurately compare this data to the digital plans defined in the building information modelling (BIM) models.  Scaled Robotics’ solution allows detection of errors and deviations, which enables construction companies to identify potential sources of construction delays early in the process and put countermeasures in place. This results in massively reduced construction times and significant cost savings. Scaled Robotics has developed a product that can help significantly increase the quality and efficiency of construction projects.  The advanced technology, the positive customer feedback and highly competent founders in Stuart Maggs and... Powering the Future with Data and BIM - Digital Construction Week 2018

Digital Construction Week 2018 returned to Excel in October as an exhibition, with a main stage for paid conference sessions and several ‘theatres’ within the exhibition space. This article gives a taste of what was on offer over the two days. Real-time Asset Management The first day started with a 15-minute presentation from the Enable My team entitled ‘The Art of Raw Data’. This was all about using camera feeds from the front of trains to build up and maintain a real-time asset record. Apparently, cameras have been deployed for some time, but the data has not been used for... (read more)

Digitizing Reality: Automated 3D Point Cloud Data Processing Using AI

Intelligent Point Clouds
Instruments for digitizing the 3D real environment are becoming smaller, more lightweight, lower-cost and more robust. Accordingly, they are finding increasingly widespread usage, not only on surveying tripods for the highest accuracy, but also on mobile platforms such as autonomous vehicles, drones, helicopters, aircraft, robotic vacuum cleaners, trains, mobile phones, satellites and Martian rovers. Lidar uses laser scanning, while photogrammetry records images from one or more cameras which may be moving. Each laser scan records tens of millions of data point positions and colours in a point cloud, and hundreds of such point clouds may be combined. This article discusses... (read more)

Bluesky 3D Model Supports Glasgow’s Plans for Regeneration and Data Integration

A detailed 3D model of Glasgow is helping shape the future of the city centre. Created by aerial mapping company Bluesky International, the expanded Glasgow Urban Model helps planners and developers enhance their understanding of the built environment, improve communication and consultation within the planning system, and promote and showcase the regeneration of Scotland’s biggest city. Derived from the latest aerial photography, the model aims to help stakeholders and members of the public become more involved in planning decisions and facilitate the ongoing promotion of Glasgow at a national and international level. Integration with BIM and Planning-related Information It is... (read more)

Nemetschek Extends Value of BIM beyond Building Design and Construction

As a pioneer of the collaborative lifecycle BIM idea, the Nemetschek Group and its brand Spacewell are now taking an essential step to bridge the gap with facilities management by embedding BIM into Integrated Workplace Management System (IWMS) software. Owners and project teams can thus benefit from BIM digital data, intelligence and visualization in the manage-and-operate phase of a building. By embedding BIM “as-built’ data into IWMS and keeping this data alive with information from building sensors and ongoing operations, the software also opens the way to create digital twins that help landlords and operators leverage intelligence throughout the useful...
