Pix4D Launches Stand-alone Photogrammetry Cloud Processing Solutions

Pix4D, the Switzerland-based photogrammetry and drone-mapping company, has released Pix4Dcloud and Pix4Dcloud Advanced: the new mapping platforms for online surveying workflows and construction site monitoring. These stand-alone cloud products run Pix4D’s photogrammetry algorithms for mapping and modelling reality from images. Pix4Dcloud Advanced extends the functionalities of Pix4Dcloud to address the needs of construction customers with timeline-based monitoring and improved accuracy. Both products now replace the previous Pix4D Cloud platforms. Christoph Strecha, founder and CEO of Pix4D, commented: “Pix4D’s new and improved cloud solutions actively contribute to completing the existing desktop and mobile product offering. Integrating Pix4D’s leading algorithms and know-how... (read more)

What is 4D Construction?

As 3D building information modelling (BIM) continues to be the technology-enabled process for design delivery, construction firms have looked for ways to leverage these 3D BIM models for downstream construction workflows. Now, engineers are incorporating 4D modelling to their workflows. The concept adds a time dimension to the 3D CAD model that enables teams to analyse the sequence of events on a timeline and visualize the completion of construction tasks. This concept can be extended to 'nD', where additional dimensions represent other types of information added to the 3D model context. Engineers, construction managers, and contractors are leveraging 4D construction... (read more)

Trimble 4D Control Software Provides Greater Geotechnical Sensor Support

Trimble has updated its core real-time monitoring software – Trimble 4D Control. Building on the recently released version 5.0, this update delivers support for Senceive’s wireless monitoring systems, streamlining the configuration process for users and delivering real-time data from geotechnical sensors to one common platform. By receiving data through Senceive’s wireless gateways into Trimble 4D Control software, project stakeholders can quickly and easily monitor critical infrastructure such as buildings surrounding construction sites, rail and tunnel projects as well as mines, dams and bridges. The announcement was made at Intergeo 2019, the world’s largest conference on geodesy, geoinformatics and land management.... (read more)

4D Construction Planning Saves GBP 1 Million on UK’s Largest-ever Water Infrastructure Project

The Thames Tideway Tunnel will capture and store raw sewage and rainwater from London’s 150-year-old sewer network, preventing overflow into the River Thames. It is the largest infrastructure project ever undertaken by the UK’s water industry. Bentley's SYNCHRO 4D workflow was used to streamline construction planning activities and to improve progress tracking and management. This has reduced the overall construction programme by 30 days, achieving GBP 1million in direct and indirect cost savings. The 25-kilometre-long tunnel is split into 24 construction sites, 11 of which are located along the river’s banks. The project involves 12 design disciplines and numerous supply-chain companies,... 3D Modelling for Construction

When it comes to 3D modelling for construction, what are the advantages and disadvantages of photogrammetry versus Lidar in terms of accuracy, complexity and cost? Breaking away from laser measurement in construction is a taboo subject, perhaps hampering the use of photogrammetry. In construction, aerial survey has enormous time-saving benefits for measuring groundwork areas. Data can be used for asset classification, construction validation as well as health and safety. In particular, regular scans provide a time series of work in progress to detect new issues, managing risk rather than responding to it. This article looks at the state of the... (read more)

3D Models Bring Virtual Reality to the Property Sector

Cityscape Digital is using Bluesky's photorealistic 3D mesh models to create live, interactive 3D environments to illustrate proposed city developments. A specialist in computer-generated imagery (CGI) solutions for the property sector, Cityscape has already created a number of virtual reality (VR) experiences using aerial mapping company Bluesky MetroVista models, for clients including Canary Wharf Group and Greycoat Real Estate. “Using the Bluesky MetroVista data, we can model proposed developments in their true context and produce a range of solutions from live, editable on-screen models to roamable walk-throughs and interactive fly-throughs. We can even create full VR experiences,” commented Damian Fennell,... (read more)

Bluesky 3D Model Helps AECOM Create Blueprint for Huddersfield

A detailed 3D computer model from Bluesky is being used to communicate a £250 million transformation of the town centre of Huddersfield, UK. Created from the most up to date, nationwide coverage of aerial photography, the model forms part of AECOM’s visualization of plans prepared for Kirklees Council. Including a 3D fly-through and realistic animations, the AECOM presentation will form part of an online platform used to consult and engage with the community. “Working with Kirklees Council we have been able to develop a strategy to transform Huddersfield town centre and identify specific projects to achieve this,” said Becky Mather,...
