How Laser Scanning Software Innovates Construction Workflows

US construction company Howard Shockey & Sons has greatly improved construction sequencing and significantly reduced project schedules following the introduction of Pointfuse laser scanning software into its scanning and VDC workflows. Used to convert vast point clouds generated by laser scanners and photogrammetry, Pointfuse creates manageable, intelligent mesh models that automatically classify building features and aid in clash detection and other construction processes – all in small, portable files that can be up to 100 times smaller than the original point cloud. This level of product integration provides for a seamless union of technologies resulting in considerable project cost savings. ... (read more)

Interoperable Data Exchange – A Key Factor for BIM

Hardly any other topic dominates the digitalization of the construction industry with such intensity as building information modelling (BIM). The pressure to reduce costs and to plan and build more complex buildings faster and more safely is increasing due to international competition. Interoperable data exchange between systems and players is a key factor for BIM. Previously used data formats have to be brought together with newer formats that are constantly undergoing a standardization process. This also poses an enormous challenge for the software systems used. This article contains a discussion of data diversity and interfaces in the BIM context and... (read more)

The Expanding Use of UAVs in Construction

Flying to Build a Better Product
It is an exciting time for geospatial professionals. The data that can now be obtained using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs, or drones) opens up previously impossible opportunities in many different industries. At the forefront of these is the construction industry. As a geospatial engineer working for a general contractor, Michael Schwind is always looking for new ways to utilize UAVs and the resulting data to improve efficiency and communication, and to detect and prevent costly – or even deadly – mistakes before they occur. In this article, he discusses some of the obvious and not-so-obvious ways that Fulton Construction, a... (read more)

Integrating the ‘Constructioneering’ Workflow Together

The How and Why of the Topcon and Bentley Partnership
Digitalisation and new technologies with the ability to revolutionise the geospatial industry are creating a new playing field for mapping and surveying professionals. This evolving landscape is also reshaping the industry, with new entrants gaining ground and established players seeking to collaborate and combine their specialist areas of expertise in order to offer a total solution. Wim van Wegen, content manager of ‘GIM International’, met with Ted Lamboo, senior vice president of strategic partners at Bentley Systems, and Ewout Korpershoek, executive vice president at Topcon Positioning Systems, at Bentley’s 2017 Year in Infrastructure Conference in Singapore. They discussed the partnership between... (read more)
