Drone Surveying Software Simplifies Workflow for Earthworks Monitoring at Construction Sites

Version 7.3 of Virtual Surveyor's drone surveying software makes it even easier to monitor earthworks progress at construction sites. Virtual Surveyor has introduced new functionality in Version 7.3 of its popular drone surveying software to create a simplified workflow for monitoring earthworks progress at construction sites. The productive workflow enables construction managers to quickly calculate cut-and-fill changes over time for comparison with the earthworks design plan. “Drones are an inexpensive and accurate way to monitor the movement of dirt at construction projects, but surveying software has lacked the tools for quick earthworks analysis with drone imagery – until now,” said... Coronavirus Outbreak Causes Shocks in Canadian Construction Industry

Respondents to the Q1 2020 RICS/CIQS Canada Construction and Infrastructure Survey are reflecting on the impact of the spread of the pandemic, as fears about implications for economic activity have deepened. Despite a huge array of government fiscal interventions (worth in the region of 14% of GDP), the recovery process is likely to prove quite protracted. “It is clear that professionals expect governments to boost infrastructure spending on the road to economic recovery,” said Sean Ellison, senior economist at RICS. “This will provide a ray of light amid the gloomier outlook for the sector, perhaps pointing to a way out... US Construction Workloads Fall during COVID-19 Pandemic

As the economic fallout from the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak takes hold, Q1 2020 RICS/AACE US Construction and Infrastructure Survey results show a significant deterioration in market sentiment. Having increased firmly during the final quarter of 2019, total workloads fell in Q1 of this year, with the net balance deteriorating from +45% to -12%. Looking into the breakdown by sector, private industrial and commercial workloads suffered the most noticeable quarterly declines (posting net balances of -17% and -16% respectively). At the other end of the scale, the feedback received points to a more resilient trend in the public residential sector, as... (read more)

Construction Economics is Fundamental in Responding to Coronavirus

How Improved Project and Cost Management of Construction is Critical to Recovering Economies
Global construction will be critical in countering the economic effects of coronavirus. Whilst most construction has been adversely affected in the short and medium term by closing sites, social distancing, material shortages and investment uncertainty, it will provide an important stimulus to the world economy if governments enable projects to proceed after the virus abates. Coupled with this, the crisis is providing a catalyst for change in the industry in terms of the greater adoption of technology, consideration of sustainability and social value impacts, and greater collaboration. Construction allows value creation – and the world will need this more than... (read more)

Accuracy Near, Far, Above or Under – How is FIG Working Week 2020 Contributing

The skills that engineering surveyors had to acquire in order to respond to the challenges of the construction world have made them capable, also, of fulfilling other challenges, several of which motivated by an awareness of the limitations of our planet. Engineering surveyors have learned that they need to push the equipment and techniques to its limits, while having recognized the necessity to integrate new techniques which can present more complete answers, without forgetting an important qualifier: accuracy. The instruments and methodologies have allowed for the surveying engineers to start working either very closely to the studied object, or, otherwise,... (read more)
