Tackling Instrument Theft in the Construction Industry

Instrument theft is a growing concern for the construction industry, with many businesses vulnerable to opportunistic criminals. Yet in 2019, only 61 incidents were reported to the authorities in the United Kingdom. This low reporting rate is having a detrimental impact on the industry, as it means that the scale of the issue may not even be fully understood and as a result finding a solution to the problem is difficult. What Makes the Construction Industry Vulnerable to Instrument Theft? The construction industry is a prime target for thieves, thanks to the use of expensive equipment and the low rate... (read more)

What Cloud Computing Means for Lidar in Construction

The construction sector is undergoing radical change. The industry is facing many challenges such as rising costs, tight project delivery and building sustainability. Above all, it must address the quality of construction and the need to constantly improve its processes. For a long time, the public clouds did not have what Lidar point cloud applications needed: high bandwidth networking, but this has been changing rapidly over the past couple of years. Digitalization will be crucial to making progress on these fronts, with 3D surveying and point cloud technology leading the charge. 2020 will mark a turning point in terms of... (read more)

How Going Digital Can Reverse Your Engineering Challenges

Nearly all engineering, architecture and construction (AEC) professionals focus on finding new ways to increase margins and reduce liability in their businesses. As technology moves so quickly, it can be difficult because there are so many available sources of information. It becomes a case of making time to use it. But how does this relate to our day-to-day market? One of my colleagues received a very interesting email from an owner-operator client, stating: “The biggest challenge that we have is that contractors seem to talk the talk at contract award time, but their implementation then drops off, as it’s not... The Expanding Use of UAVs in Construction

Flying to Build a Better Product
It is an exciting time for geospatial professionals. The data that can now be created with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs or ‘drones’) opens up previously impossible opportunities in many different industries. At the forefront of these is the construction industry. As a geospatial engineer working for a general contractor, Michael Schwind is always looking for new ways to utilize UAVs and the resulting data to improve efficiency and communication, and to detect and prevent costly – or even deadly – mistakes before they occur. In this article he discusses some of the obvious and not-so-obvious ways that Fulton Construction, a... (read more)
