Seeing the Future: AI, BIM and Digital Twins

Digital Construction Week 2019
During Digital Construction Week (DCW), which was held at the Excel in London from 16-17 October 2019, there was one seminar stream on geospatial surveying and two specifically on building information modelling (BIM). But relevant topics such as artificial intelligence (AI) and visualization, as well as BIM, cropped up in many of the other sessions. The most used buzzword was 'digital twin', which was heard in many talks and in the exhibition booths. The term digital twin is used quite flexibly, but essentially it implies that an object must have a digital representation which can be presented visually, i.e. a virtual... (read more)

Qinertia PPK Software Now Supports Third-party IMUs

SBG Systems’ popular INS/GNSS PPK software called Qinertia now covers all surveyors’ projects by offering a licence dedicated to GNSS post-processing, according to the France-based company. Open to the world, Qinertia supports all major GNSS receivers and is now open to third-party IMUs. Qinertia has been designed to offer a comprehensive suite of post-processing software to the geospatial world. It accepts all major GNSS manufacturers, and supports proprietary protocols from Novatel, Septentrio, Trimble and Ublox for a straightforward workflow. It is one of the first full-featured post-processing software to offer a native support for Ublox F9 RTK receivers, reducing the... (read more)

Trimble Launches New R12 GNSS Receiver

Trimble has introduced the Trimble R12 GNSS receiver, a high-performance global navigation satellite system (GNSS) surveying solution. Powered by an all new real-time kinematic (RTK) and Trimble RTX positioning engine, it features innovative Trimble ProPoint GNSS technology that empowers land surveyors to quickly measure more points in more places than ever before. Surveyors who work in challenging GNSS environments can use the Trimble R12 receiver to help reduce both the time in the field and the need for conventional techniques such as using a total station. The new Trimble ProPoint GNSS technology allows for flexible signal management, which helps mitigate the effects of... (read more)

Rapid Site Surveys Using SLAM Technology

Access All Areas: Geomatics Systems for the Future
The difficulties of undertaking geospatial surveys, particularly in unstable buildings or underground environments, are well documented. However, the pressure to collect accurate, real-time data within strict timelines has certainly intensified in recent years. With increasingly tight deadlines coupled with strict budgets, conducting surveys of hard-to-access sites can be a real challenge for engineering and construction firms. This article explains how new innovations in building information modelling (BIM) are providing an answer with the aid of simultaneous localisation and mapping (SLAM) technology. As engineering and construction firms grapple with issues such as skills shortages, robust safety regulations and fierce competition for contracts,... (read more)

Lidar Point Cloud Segmentation

A Novel Framework for Processing Terrestrial Lidar Data
Terrestrial Lidar data has great potential to produce measurements for as-built building information modelling (BIM). Unfortunately, processing hundreds of millions of points, often contaminated by substantial noise, can be tedious and time-consuming. Normal variation analysis (Norvana) segmentation is an automatic method that can segment large terrestrial Lidar point clouds containing hundreds of millions of points within minutes. Thanks to the high speed, point density and accuracy of modern terrestrial laser scanning (TLS), as-built BIM can be conducted with a high level of detail. But TLS captures not only useful geometric information but also unwanted objects, such as people, animals or... (read more)
