Infrastructure Group Benefits from Drone Technology in Smart Motorways Project

The international infrastructure group Balfour Beatty is reaping the rewards of using drones on major construction projects, including work on a multi-million-pound 'Smart Motorway' upgrade in the Midlands region of the UK with support from UAV specialist Heliguy. The group is utilizing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs or 'drones'), including the recently released DJI Phantom 4 RTK, to enhance safety, increase efficiency, gather data faster, improve asset productivity and gain high-accuracy results. The UAVs are being used for quicker stockpile measurements, informative aerial progress reports and accessing hard-to-reach areas. Balfour Beatty has turned to drone expert Heliguy as its preferred supplier,... (read more)

How Pointfuse Laser Scanning Software Helps to Transform Infrastructure CAD

Engineering consultancy Hatch has transformed its handling of laser-scanned data on major infrastructure projects by using Pointfuse software to classify and manipulate billions of individual measurements. Originally used on a project to produce as-built plans of an aluminium casting plant, the application of Pointfuse realized significant savings in data processing time, reduced the impact on Hatch’s IT infrastructure and delivered CAD-compatible floor plans for the first time since the facility was constructed in 1973. The Mississauga, Ontario, office of Hatch was originally commissioned to produce detailed floor plans and undertake flow studies of a multi-level, mixed use facility comprising both... (read more)

Technical Advances Bring Digital Twin of Underground Infrastructure Closer

Mapping the underground is one of the major challenges in creating an infrastructure map at the municipal, regional, and national level, which is a key foundation for a national digital twin. Recent technical developments include: the ability to collect data at highway speeds that can be used to create a 3D model of underground infrastructure, software that can extract relevant 3D underground information from consumer digital photography, and video capture. Meanwhile, novel ways to share information about underground infrastructure, and progress on standards for sharing information about the subsurface are making mapping the underground increasingly feasible. The uncertainty in the... (read more)

4D Construction Planning Saves GBP 1 Million on UK’s Largest-ever Water Infrastructure Project

The Thames Tideway Tunnel will capture and store raw sewage and rainwater from London’s 150-year-old sewer network, preventing overflow into the River Thames. It is the largest infrastructure project ever undertaken by the UK’s water industry. Bentley's SYNCHRO 4D workflow was used to streamline construction planning activities and to improve progress tracking and management. This has reduced the overall construction programme by 30 days, achieving GBP 1million in direct and indirect cost savings. The 25-kilometre-long tunnel is split into 24 construction sites, 11 of which are located along the river’s banks. The project involves 12 design disciplines and numerous supply-chain companies,... Coronavirus to Weigh on Q1 Construction Activity

International construction activity picked up in the last quarter of 2019, according to the latest findings of RICS’ series of international infrastructure and construction surveys. However, rising costs remain a drag on the sector, and the impact of coronavirus could hamper short-term output. Across all regions surveyed by RICS, infrastructure and construction professionals reported a trend of increased workloads in Q4 2019, but the overall picture varies considerably within these global regions. Despite a solid end to the year from the construction and infrastructure sector globally, coronavirus is likely to weigh on activity. Given the lockdown on the mainland, it... (read more)

For Digital Twins, Openness Wins

What would you say if you could wave a magic wand and eliminate all the time and effort that you and your organization spend on transforming data, integrating data and aggregating data? What if you could spend your time generating insights and helping your teams make decisions that can save you money and reduce your risk instead? When I began my career, our industry was going through the digital transformation of CAD, which was taking what we were doing on paper and moving that to the computer. The next disruption was when the industry moved from CAD to BIM –... (read more)
