Further Cooperation Between Leica and Autodesk in Building Construction

Leica Geosystems has announced further cooperation with Autodesk to connect the latest robotic total stations for construction, the Leica iCON iCR70 and iCR80, with the Autodesk BIM 360 layout mobile app, an industry construction management platform. The continued collaboration between the two organisations centres around the expanding role of building information modelling (BIM) in construction. This latest effort creates a seamless workflow, sending positions from the robotic total stations to the mobile app to compare design data, increasing efficiency and productivity from field to office. With the integration to the iCR70 and iCR80 robotic total stations, BIM 360 Layout for... (read more)

3D Scan Data Pioneer Scaled Robotics Secures €2m Seed Investment

Norwegian Construct Venture and German PropTech Fund Surplus Invest have jointly invested in the promising deep-tech company Scaled Robotics. The start-up has developed a robot that builds detailed 3D maps of construction sites using its multimodal sensors suite, and software that can accurately compare this data to the digital plans defined in the building information modelling (BIM) models.  Scaled Robotics’ solution allows detection of errors and deviations, which enables construction companies to identify potential sources of construction delays early in the process and put countermeasures in place. This results in massively reduced construction times and significant cost savings. Scaled Robotics has developed a product that can help significantly increase the quality and efficiency of construction projects.  The advanced technology, the positive customer feedback and highly competent founders in Stuart Maggs and... Connected Construction: Shaping a Digital Future

Despite forecasts revealing that growth in the construction sector will rise by a staggering 70% across the world by 2025, it’s fair to say that compared to other industry sectors, the construction and engineering industry has been slower to embrace digital technology. With only a few AEC companies using digital as a tool to create new business opportunities and improve margins, many are missing out on innovative approaches to driving down costs and improving project execution. But this is about to change. The significant benefits that digital technologies bring to the way we design, construct and maintain our infrastructure can... (read more)

The Paperless Construction Site

Digitalization is changing the construction industry faster than expected. Automation, additional sensors and the networking of machines make it possible to exploit optimization potential and noticeably increase productivity. However, despite innovative working methods and digitization, the road construction process is still mainly based on one medium: paper. Paper can be used for a wide variety of purposes and offers unlimited flexibility. Construction schedules, work schedules, work sheets, mix orders and requirement slips are still created manually and then printed more often than ever before. Although there are software systems such as BPO for digitizing all processes in civil engineering companies,... (read more)

What's the Difference Between SLAM Algorithms for Handheld Lidar?

While researching handheld Lidar scanners, you will probably scour spec sheets, cross-reference features, and read about software workflows. But that will get you only part of the way to understanding the market – you will also need to compare the simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) algorithms that power these devices and enable them to create a point cloud as you walk. The problem is that SLAM algorithms can be difficult to understand if you're not a software engineer. Good news: There are a few criteria you can use to judge SLAM algorithms. These criteria will help you understand what sets... (read more)

Using Drones in Construction for Aerial Inspection, Photogrammetry or Lidar

Drones are creating new workflows, processes and applications in construction design, surveying and mapping, and many see them as the future of the construction industry. Rick Rayhel, Microdrones' sales manager for United States' Western Region, is one of those people; he's seen first hand how drones can enhance the construction business. In the U.S., drones have only been used to aid construction in the last couple of years. On the precipice of drone potential, Rayhel said, “There’s never a lack of ideas or interest on what can be done with drones.” Perhaps the biggest advantage of drones in construction, though,...
