ISG Transforms 3D Model Delivery to Boost BIM Capabilities

Global construction services company ISG is using the latest 3D modelling technology to stimulate its building information modelling (BIM) capabilities. By introducing Pointfuse laser scanning software, ISG has speeded up workflows with rapid scan-to-BIM modelling whilst maintaining high levels of accuracy. Traditionally this laser data processing could take up to three days to 3D model a single floor. However, using Pointfuse, ISG has reduced this to a matter of hours. The use of Pointfuse has also increased the range of the point cloud outputs with applications including clash detection and visualization. “Scan-to-BIM modelling was previously seen as undesirable by the... Lidar Point Cloud Segmentation

A Novel Framework for Processing Terrestrial Lidar Data
Terrestrial Lidar data has great potential to produce measurements for as-built building information modelling (BIM). Unfortunately, processing hundreds of millions of points, often contaminated by substantial noise, can be tedious and time-consuming. Normal variation analysis (Norvana) segmentation is an automatic method that can segment large terrestrial Lidar point clouds containing hundreds of millions of points within minutes. Thanks to the high speed, point density and accuracy of modern terrestrial laser scanning (TLS), as-built BIM can be conducted with a high level of detail. But TLS captures not only useful geometric information but also unwanted objects, such as people, animals or... (read more)

Tell the World: We Are More than Scan-to-BIM

Building information modelling (BIM) will be a growing opportunity for the surveying and spatial industry, providing we focus more on adding value to BIM and concentrate on what we can offer to other industries thanks to BIM rather than merely preparing it. Opportunities in digital twins, smart buildings, smart infrastructures and smart cities require more than just BIM as data. The surveying and spatial industry will not benefit from this growing market without fully realizing the BIM market opportunity and providing advocacy, leadership and education in BIM. Scan-to-BIM is promising but even more lies beyond With the increasing availability of... (read more)

The Role of Surveyors in the Evolution of BIM

Building information modelling (BIM) is becoming more commonplace within construction sectors globally, combining technology with improved collaboration to better manage projects and give them the best chance of complying with time and budget constraints. However, the BIM life cycle and efforts to espouse it are almost futile if surveying is taken out of the equation or, more realistically, brought in too late. It can be good to have a structure that is successfully using BIM to be delivered on time and within budget, but if it or any of its components are in the wrong position the consequences can be... Procore Puts 3D Models into Builders’ Hands with Procore BIM

Procore Technologies, a leading provider of construction management software, has announced Procore BIM, the newest product on its platform which unlocks the potential of Building Information Modelling (BIM) by providing field teams with performant access to 3D models on their iOS devices. Virtual design and construction (VDC) teams spend hours working with their design, operations, and trade partners to coordinate system installation information (3D models) during design in an effort to improve project predictability in the field. This process can cost millions of dollars, but unfortunately today, 3D models are rarely used on mobile devices in the field due to... (read more)
