Six Facts You Need to Know about 3D Reality Capture

Rapid changes in technology and computing power are affecting almost every aspect of our lives – from democratization and information access to communication and how we visualize the world around us. As technology becomes smaller, more affordable and more automated, 3D reality capture is becoming more accessible to a wide range of applications and everyday users, not just specialists. Whether you are a savvy user or new to 3D reality capture, Jürgen Mayer, president of Hexagon Geosystems’ Reality Capture Division, explores six facts in this interview. 3D reality capture solutions form the bridge to transform the real world into mirrored... InfiPoints 6.0: Modelling Directly from Laser Scans to Autodesk Revit

Elysium has developed an advanced functionality to model piping and structures from 3D laser scanned point clouds into Autodesk Revit. This new capability is included in Elysium’s point cloud utilization software, InfiPoints 6.0, which has been release on 30 September. The new feature allows Revit users to reduce their modelling time significantly. There is no need any more to create models of existing facilities from scratch. Furthermore, the CAD data extracted from point cloud data in InfiPoints is automatically imported into Revit to add finishing touches. Lidar technology Industry pioneers and some service providers have recently begun employing 3D laser... (read more)

3D Modelling for Construction

When it comes to 3D modelling for construction, what are the advantages and disadvantages of photogrammetry versus Lidar in terms of accuracy, complexity and cost? Breaking away from laser measurement in construction is a taboo subject, perhaps hampering the use of photogrammetry. In construction, aerial survey has enormous time-saving benefits for measuring groundwork areas. Data can be used for asset classification, construction validation as well as health and safety. In particular, regular scans provide a time series of work in progress to detect new issues, managing risk rather than responding to it. This article looks at the state of the... (read more)

Pointfuse Showcases New Scan-to-BIM Workflow at Digital Construction Week

At this year's Digital Construction Week, Pointfuse demonstrated a new scan-to-BIM workflow, aimed at bringing reality capture to building information modelling (BIM) and virtual design and construction (VDC) practitioners. Pointfuse software converts the millions of individual measurements captured by laser scanning and photogrammetry into usable 3D mesh models. The ability to classify objects within Pointfuse, both automatically and manually, has had a huge impact on how as-built data is used within the construction workflow.   New features also on show at Digital Construction Week, which took place from 16-17 October at Excel, London, included streamlined classification to ensure maximum efficiency and... "The Benefits of BIM Are Now Proven"

Interview with Kevin Lea, senior vice president product management at ALLPLAN
The construction industry seems to be rapidly gaining ground in the race to digitalization. There is wide adoption of building information modelling (BIM) and digital twins, making architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) an important field for providers of 3D reality capture solutions. In this interview Kevin Lea, senior vice president product management at ALLPLAN, a leading European vendor of open BIM solutions, shares his vision on the challenges and trends in the AEC sector and his company’s ambitions for the years ahead. With what challenges does the construction industry see itself faced today? Around the world we see pressures for new... (read more)

Tackling Problems in Construction with Geospatial Analytics

The construction industry has always lagged behind in innovation compared to other industries, but geospatial data analytics is now set to transform construction, architectural design and civil engineering. Geospatial data analytics is location-based information generated by billions of devices around the world. The additional insights provided to engineers and architects can help the construction industry to cut costs and improve efficiency. Core problems with the construction industry To understand the gains made from data analytics, it’s important to explain the problems the construction industry faces. According to a report, construction projects take 20% longer to complete and go over budget by... Applications of Laser Scanning, Augmented Reality and BIM in Existing Facilities

The benefits of BIM in facility management are well known, but many buildings don’t even have a basic set of 2D drawings available. This is especially common in facilities that were built long ago, when computer-aided design was emerging or non-existent. Creating a smart 3D model of an existing facility from zero is possible, but the number of man-hours required and their cost can be considerable. While BIM is often associated with design, it can also be a powerful tool in facility management. This is especially true in large commercial or industrial facilities, where complex building systems are constantly interacting.... (read more)

Remodelling King's Cross Station

London’s King’s Cross railway station is one of the busiest stations in the United Kingdom, serving close to 40 million passengers each year. But it’s been 25 years since any major intervention has taken place on the railway, and it is now in need of some major renewal and remodelling work. The remodelling will allow for an increase in the length and number of long-distance trains and facilitate future improvements to journey times. Specialist Project Integration (SPI) are undertaking this massive £250 million project which includes extending passenger platforms, recommissioning an unused tunnel, optimising the track layout and modernising the... Geospatial Tools that Help Serve the AEC Industry

Of the dozens of geospatial hardware and software tools currently in use, only a few – such as bathymetric Lidar, GNSS-based vehicle tracking devices and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) – are not directly relevant to the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry. The rest of the tools are. A GIS interprets the geographic context of a project, while the survey-grade GNSS technology builds it; aerial photogrammetry maps the project’s site, as UAVs monitor exterior progress; and mobile indoor scanners such as the Trimble Indoor Mobile Mapping Solution (TIMMS) produce as-built point clouds of the interiors, while building information modelling (BIM) manages the project’s...
