5 Benefits of Digital Transformation in Construction

Matt Wheelis has spent his entire 20-plus year career in the construction industry – most of it related to bringing technology to architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) professionals. In that time, he has seen many changes. From using a plumb bob and string line for construction surveys to clients now requesting point clouds for as-built comparisons, there have been lots of change over the years. Here, he examines five benefits resulting from today's digital transformation. Today, though, the construction industry is experiencing a rate of transformation as I’ve never witnessed before. Digital technologies have rapidly transformed construction sites. Construction professionals... (read more)

Doka Launches Formwork Planning Software for Revit

Digitalization promises significant productivity gains for the construction industry and its complex planning processes and procedures. The use of building information modelling (BIM) in construction design is a key factor in these gains. BIM models are increasingly used as the basis for formwork planning. Doka is launching DokaCAD for Revit, its powerful software for automated formwork planning. Efficient formwork systems have a significant influence on the success of a shell construction project, which requires correct and reliable formwork planning and optimal cycle planning. BIM software can be used to simulate situations and determine the optimal construction sequence before the project... (read more)

KP1 and Trimble Sign a Strategic BIM Design Partnership Agreement

KP1 Group, a French leader of precast building systems, and Trimble Solutions France, provider of Tekla Structures software and other construction solutions, have signed a strategic partnership agreement. In order to optimize and rationalize the process of its 39 sites, including 21 production plants all over France, KP1 Group has redefined and sped up the use of new building information modelling (BIM) technologies. KP1 investigated model-based solutions that would integrate into its production strategy in a flexible way. Trimble’s software solutions Tekla Structures and Trimble Connect cover the whole design and detailing process for the beam-column building types but also... (read more)

The Art of BIM Implementation

The Past, the Present and the Future of the New International BIM Standard
Aside from the normal barriers for implementing change within a business, additional barriers exist in the case of Building Information Modelling (BIM). Implementing BIM requires leadership, a team with common and clear goals, and a mechanism to celebrate progression. Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a means of creating a data-rich digital representation of an asset, be that buildings or infrastructure. The processes behind BIM form the foundations for smart information production (digitisation) and management through the lifecycle of the project. BIM encourages all project parties to work collaboratively, aiding project efficiency, de-risking project cost models and programmes, and enabling use... (read more)

Casablanca’s Medina Buildings Monitored during Tunnel Construction

Vibrations during the construction of a new 1,890m tunnel adjacent to Casablanca’s Old Medina, the 250-year-old section of the famed Moroccan city, challenged the stability of its historically important buildings. It was essential to monitor in real time the effects on the Medina’s aging buildings and to confirm that the construction work meets all engineering standards and guidelines. Therefore ETAFAT, a geospatial information acquisition and processing company, used the Nikon XF total station to perform more than 100 daily inspections. The ETAFAT team relied on optical targets placed on building facades whose coordinates were determined by forced centering to complete... (read more)

How Digitalization in the Construction Industry Drives the Geospatial Business Forward

In a recent survey among geospatial surveyors, the growth in construction, infrastructure and urban planning is revealed as an important role of the optimistic outlook for the geospatial industry. Increasing investments in large infrastructure and construction projects, and the rise of building information modelling (BIM), are expected to bring bright prospects both for geospatial equipment manufacturers as geospatial service providers. The survey was conducted by 'GIM International', the leading publication for mapping and surveying professionals worldwide. In the GIM International study, a relatively high number of surveying companies mentioned the AEC and infrastructure markets as areas where they foresee the biggest possibilities... (read more)

The Need for BIM Standards in Digital Construction

How can standards contribute to producing optimum processes and deliverables for building projects through building information modelling (BIM)? This article explains the benefits in terms of reduced delivery time, improved cooperation and lower costs. The implementation of building information modelling (BIM) in construction projects involves the digital representation of the physical and functional characteristics of the components that constitute a construction project. The resulting BIM digital model constitutes a reliable basis for decision-making throughout the life of the project and features not only great benefits associated with reduced delivery time, but also improved cooperation between sectors and lower construction cost...
