The BIM Skills Shortage in the Middle East

If BIM is applied to the industry effectively, it could allow the built environment sector to accomplish the same productivity gains as the aerospace, automotive and manufacturing industries. According to the Middle East Construction and Infrastructure Survey conducted earlier this year, however, there is currently a shortage of BIM managers in the region, as cited by 40% of built environment professionals. As digitization continues to grow in the built environment, surveying professionals need to keep up with the technological advancements to achieve maximum output for the project. There are many reasons BIM is growing in popularity for construction projects. It is... (read more)

Pointfuse Launches Simple BIM Solution for Facilities Management

Pointfuse has developed smart software that automates the identification and classification of objects for facilities management applications using data from mobile mapping systems like the new Leica BLK2GO. The software converts the millions of individual measurements captured by laser scanning and photogrammetry into usable 3D mesh models. The ability to classify objects within Pointfuse, both automatically and manually, has brought new possibilities in how as-built data is used within design and construction.   The software solution now can realize real time records for space utilization and optimization projects, reducing costs and speeding workflows within facilities management. Pointfuse ‘Simple BIM’ (sBIM) leverages... (read more)

Nemetschek Extends Value of BIM beyond Building Design and Construction

As a pioneer of the collaborative lifecycle BIM idea, the Nemetschek Group and its brand Spacewell are now taking an essential step to bridge the gap with facilities management by embedding BIM into Integrated Workplace Management System (IWMS) software. Owners and project teams can thus benefit from BIM digital data, intelligence and visualization in the manage-and-operate phase of a building. By embedding BIM “as-built’ data into IWMS and keeping this data alive with information from building sensors and ongoing operations, the software also opens the way to create digital twins that help landlords and operators leverage intelligence throughout the useful... New Map Shows Progress of Giant Machines Creating Super Sewer Beneath the Thames

A new, interactive map has been launched showing the progress of the giant underground machines creating London’s new super sewer below the River Thames. Four tunnel boring machines (TBMs) are currently digging the 25km Thames Tideway Tunnel, under construction to stop sewage pollution in the River Thames. The new online map shows the TBMs have tunnelled more than 9km so far and passed under six road bridges, with Ursula – the machine creating a central section of the tunnel – approaching Westminster Bridge, and Rachel – digging in the west – recently passing beneath Putney Bridge. Jackie Roe, Tideway’s Deputy... (read more)

Interoperable Data Exchange – A Key Factor for BIM

Interoperability is key in the building information modelling (BIM) context. Data diversity and interfaces, as well as possibilities for combining different data in BIM projects, are outlined in this article. Hardly any other topic dominates the digitalization of the construction industry with such intensity as building information modelling (BIM). The pressure to reduce costs and to plan and build more complex buildings faster and more safely is increasing due to international competition. Interoperable data exchange between systems and players is a key factor for BIM. Previously used data formats have to be brought together with newer formats that are constantly... (read more)
