What Cloud Computing Means for Lidar in Construction

The construction sector is undergoing radical change. The industry is facing many challenges such as rising costs, tight project delivery and building sustainability. Above all, it must address the quality of construction and the need to constantly improve its processes. For a long time, the public clouds did not have what Lidar point cloud applications needed: high bandwidth networking, but this has been changing rapidly over the past couple of years. Digitalization will be crucial to making progress on these fronts, with 3D surveying and point cloud technology leading the charge. 2020 will mark a turning point in terms of... (read more)

5 Benefits of Digital Transformation in Construction

Matt Wheelis has spent his entire 20-plus year career in the construction industry – most of it related to bringing technology to architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) professionals. In that time, he has seen many changes. From using a plumb bob and string line for construction surveys to clients now requesting point clouds for as-built comparisons, there have been lots of change over the years. Here, he examines five benefits resulting from today's digital transformation. Today, though, the construction industry is experiencing a rate of transformation as I’ve never witnessed before. Digital technologies have rapidly transformed construction sites. Construction professionals... (read more)

Bentley Acquires UK Leader in Cloud Services for Construction Information Management

Bentley Systems has announced the acquisition of GroupBC, a leading UK software as a service (SaaS) innovator. For over 20 years, GroupBC’s and Bentley’s software solutions have been deployed for complementary purposes to improve project and asset information management. The transaction results from GroupBC’s expansion agenda – and Bentley’s investment appetite – for international growth opportunities stemming from the UK’s national initiatives for major infrastructure investment and towards infrastructure digital twins.  GroupBC’s Common Data Environments (CDE) solutions, BC Projects and BC Enterprise+, have been widely applied in the UK for information management respectively across construction and asset estates. Largely due to... (read more)

The Art of BIM Implementation

The Past, the Present and the Future of the New International BIM Standard
Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a means of creating a data-rich digital representation of an asset, be that buildings or infrastructure. The processes behind BIM form the foundations for smart information production (digitisation) and management through the lifecycle of the project. BIM encourages all project parties to work collaboratively, aiding project efficiency, de-risking project cost models and programmes, and enabling use of the model to inform operations and maintenance decision-making in the future. Standards exist to inform end clients and project teams about how to implement BIM in the delivery and management of projects and assets.  In the UK, the... (read more)

The Paperless Construction Site

Digitalization is changing the construction industry faster than expected. Automation, additional sensors and the networking of machines make it possible to exploit optimization potential and noticeably increase productivity. However, despite innovative working methods and digitization, the road construction process is still mainly based on one medium: paper. Will we ever see paperless construction sites? Paper can be used for a wide variety of purposes and offers unlimited flexibility. Construction schedules, work schedules, work sheets, mix orders and requirement slips are still created manually and then printed more often than ever before. Although there are software systems such as BPO for... (read more)

Digitizing Reality: Automated 3D Point Cloud Data Processing Using AI

Intelligent Point Clouds
Instruments for digitizing the 3D real environment are becoming smaller, more lightweight, lower-cost and more robust. Accordingly, they are finding increasingly widespread usage, not only on surveying tripods for the highest accuracy, but also on mobile platforms such as autonomous vehicles, drones, helicopters, aircraft, robotic vacuum cleaners, trains, mobile phones, satellites and Martian rovers. Lidar uses laser scanning, while photogrammetry records images from one or more cameras which may be moving. Each laser scan records tens of millions of data point positions and colours in a point cloud, and hundreds of such point clouds may be combined. This article discusses... (read more)
