Alaska Uses QuickBird Imagery

The State of Alaska’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is using DigitalGlobe (CO, USA) QuickBird satellite imagery for forest inventory management, practice assessments and health and disease assessments. The DNR Division of Forestry already commissioned QuickBird data through DigitalGlobe for the past three years; recently the DNR purchased 18 scenes of QuickBird Basic and Standard imagery products covering 1,300 square kilometres (320,000 acres). The Division of Forestry teamed with the Alaska Department of Fish & Game to purchase a multi-agency license of the image products. The DNR also purchased QuickBird Ortho-ready products covering 1,200 square kilometres (285,000 acres) of Alaska’s south-eastern panhandle. These products provide information about how timber harvesting, reforestation and timber access occur on state, private and municipal land.
