IGOS Geohazards Workshop

BRGM - French Geological Survey has announced the IGOS Geohazards Workshop which takes place at the BRGM Scientific and technical Centre from 27th-29th June 2005 in Orléans, France.

This event will bring together representatives from diverse communities involved in the study and mitigation of geohazards (that is, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis and ground instability) to work collectively toward improved disaster management for the geohazards around the globe. The following communities are expected to be among those represented: research institutions, civil protection authorities, geological surveys, volcano observations, earthquake and ground stability monitoring networks, the service industry and space agencies. One of the primary aims of the event is to identify initial projects to be pursued under the Geohazard IGOS, and to set up appropriate working groups to take the next steps toward its implementation.

The Geohazards IGOS represents a subset of the hazards identified in the GEOSS (the Global Earth Observation System of Systems) as requiring better observational support, data integration, and broader data access for all countries. A second key outcome of this workshop will e the identification of ways in which this community can present a coherent face to wider international initiatives like GEOSS, to mutual benefit of all those promoting geoscience concerns.

The workshop format will be a mixture of oral session and break-out sessions within which specific topics related to these five aspects will be addressed.
