Leica Wins Contract with University of Nottingham, IESSG

Leica Geosystems Ltd (UK) has won a contract to supply surveying equipment valued at £640,000 (US$ 1,206,604.61) to University of Nottingham’s Institute of Engineering Surveying and Space Geodesy (IESSG). The equipment consists of eight Continuously Operating Reference Stations (CORS), one HDS3000 3D Laser Scanner with software, and Photogrammetric instrumentation. This top of the range suite of surveying equipment will be used for research applications at the IESSG.

The CORS receivers will be used to create a regional network of RTK reference stations, all supplying RTK raw data to a 'hub' at IESSG. The raw data will be used to study methods of computing and disseminating area-based corrections to RTK rover receivers in the field. The whole approach to regional RTK networks is still in its infancy, with many opportunities to study and improve the delivery of corrections at all levels.

Research into Landscape modelling has long been an established theme at IESSG, which will now be enhanced with the addition of this 3D terrestrial laser scanning. Recent projects on coastal zone management and on building measurement will continue to be the focus for the HDS3000. A recent successful deployment was at Lincoln Cathedral where several Heritage funds were interested in this type of application.
