Matterport brings famous German mediaeval arch bridge to life

Lidar-powered Matterport technology was employed to create a 3D digital twin of the most famous inhabited bridge globally, the Krämerbrücke, situated in the city of Erfurt, Thuringia, Germany.

The Krämerbrücke (Merchant’s Bridge in English) holds the distinction of being the longest fully constructed and continuously inhabited bridge north of the Alps. Situated in the medieval old town of Erfurt, it rightfully claims its place as a significant landmark in the state capital of Thuringia. This bridge – a feature it has sustained for over 500 years – serves as a beloved promenade for both the residents of Erfurt and visitors from around the globe.

Utilizing Matterport, the nearly 35,000-square-foot (3,250-square-metre) structure was captured as a 3D digital twin, intricately detailing over 30 shops and businesses along the bridge. This allows viewers to virtually explore at their own pace and ascend the tower to enjoy breathtaking views of the city.

Capturing 3D data from a distance

The Matterport Pro3 camera, tailored for large scans and outdoor settings, was chosen to capture the entire space. Equipped with Lidar sensors, the Pro3 captures millions of measurements in varying lighting conditions, from dim light to direct sunlight. With the capability to capture 3D data up to 100 metres away in approximately 20 seconds per sweep, the Pro3 expedites the scanning process, ensuring prompt project completion.

Matterport spearheads the digital transformation of the built world. Its innovative spatial data platform converts buildings into valuable and accessible data. Countless structures worldwide have been transformed into immersive Matterport digital twins, enhancing every facet of the building lifecycle, including planning, construction, operations, documentation, appraisal and marketing.
