New Map Shows Progress of Giant Machines Creating Super Sewer Beneath the Thames

A new, interactive map has been launched showing the progress of the giant underground machines creating London’s new super sewer below the River Thames. Four tunnel boring machines (TBMs) are currently digging the 25km Thames Tideway Tunnel, under construction to stop sewage pollution in the River Thames. The new online map shows the TBMs have tunnelled more than 9km so far and passed under six road bridges, with Ursula – the machine creating a central section of the tunnel – approaching Westminster Bridge, and Rachel – digging in the west – recently passing beneath Putney Bridge. Jackie Roe, Tideway’s Deputy... (read more)

3D Scan Data Pioneer Scaled Robotics Secures €2m Seed Investment

Norwegian Construct Venture and German PropTech Fund Surplus Invest have jointly invested in the promising deep-tech company Scaled Robotics. The start-up has developed a robot that builds detailed 3D maps of construction sites using its multimodal sensor suite, and software that can accurately compare this data to the digital plans defined in the building information modelling (BIM) models.  Scaled Robotics’ solution allows detection of errors and deviations, which enables construction companies to identify potential sources of construction delays early in the process and put countermeasures in place. This results in massively reduced construction times and significant cost savings. Scaled Robotics has developed a product that can help significantly increase the quality and efficiency of construction projects.  The advanced technology, the positive customer feedback and highly competent founders in Stuart Maggs and... What Cloud Computing Means for Lidar in Construction

Increased focus on the cloud and point clouds in the construction sector is expected to result in new levels of speed, collaboration and real-time communication. The construction sector is undergoing radical change. The industry is facing many challenges such as rising costs, tight project delivery and building sustainability. Above all, it must address the quality of construction and the need to constantly improve its processes. For a long time, the public clouds did not have what Lidar point cloud applications needed: high bandwidth networking, but this has been changing rapidly over the past couple of years. Digitalization will be crucial... (read more)

How Rapid Scanning Provides Support During a Global Health Crisis

Geospatial technology can play an important role in the expansion of hospital capacity in response to the coronavirus pandemic. In this feature, David Fowkes, sales director at 3D mapping and monitoring specialist GeoSLAM, explains how the rapid surveying capabilities of SLAM technology can enable health officials across the globe to quickly and safely assess potential hospital buildings. Around the world we have seen unprecedented efforts to increase capacity in stretched health systems as a result of the spread of coronavirus. In Wuhan, China, the epicentre for the virus, the 269,000 sq ft, thousand-bed Huoshenshan Hospital, was built from scratch in... (read more)
